Child Support Modification Granted to Beyonce's Dad

Sometimes, a parent with child support obligations will suffer a job loss or some other circumstance that makes their financial situation much bleaker than it previously was. Individuals for whom this is the case may have concerns regarding their ability to make their child support payments. One child-support-related option individuals in such a situation may have is to make a request to a court asking that the amount of their monthly payments be reduced. Family law attorneys can help parents with the process of making a child support modification request.

Recently, a child support modification was granted in a matter involving a celebrity parent, Mathew Knowles. Knowles is the father of famous singer Beyonce Knowles.

The matter involved Mathew Knowles' child support obligations regarding a child he had with someone other than Beyonce's mother. The amount of the child support payments was $12,000 a month. Knowles then made a request for a reduction in the child support amount on the grounds of changed financial circumstances. In 2011, Knowles was fired from his position as Beyonce's manager.

The judge the modification request went before found that the firing did cause a significant income drop for Knowles and ruled in favor of his modification request. The judge ordered that the child support payment amount be reduced to around $2,500 a month and that this change be retroactive to February of last year.

Another aspect of the judge's decision, however, went against Knowles. The judge ruled that Knowles has to pay $15,000 for the legal fees the mother of the above-mentioned child incurred in relation to the matter.
