Questions to Ask When Hiring a Divorce Attorney

If you find yourself in need of an experienced and aggressive Arizona divorce attorney, you’ll probably seek out advice, answers to your questions and potential referrals online. There will be plenty of information. In fact, there will be far too much information. You’ll have so much information to wade through that you’ll be exhausted before you begin. If you’re in need of a good divorce lawyer, make an appointment for a consultation and then ask the right questions.

Top 5 Questions You Should Ask Before Hiring a Divorce Lawyer

  1. What type of OTHER cases do you handle? Do you only handle divorce and family law cases? When you work with an attorney/firm that dedicates all their resources to divorce and family law, you’ll see an increased focus and dedication, as they are intent on handling EXACTLY what you came to them with for help.
  2. How many years have you been practicing family law? You want to know how many years they’ve spent being a litigator and handling family law cases.
  3. Who will handle my case and how will tasks be delegated? You’ll want to know what to expect and you’ll find answers to question telling. Some attorneys are spread too thin. If there’s not enough support staff, you’ll have difficulty staying in touch prior to court. They could be spread too thin with various cases in different courtrooms. In other instances, they may rely too heavily on non-attorney support staff for the day-to-day handling of the case. Make sure that your case will be given the time, care and attention it deserves.
  4. How will I be charged? Specifically? You mostly want to make sure there IS an answer to this question. If there’s no straightforward reply, you might want to keep looking for another lawyer. You may be offered a written retainer agreement that lays out the exact hourly rate and how the fees will be billed. At a minimum, make sure you know the hourly rate you will be charged and how they will expect you to pay your fees as well as the total amount of any initial deposit. Other helpful bits of information include: when you will receive your bill, whether or not you will need to continually replenish the retainer/deposit, etc. Use caution with lawyers who charge a flat fee. It attracts many in the beginning stages, but may affect performance as they can result in limited work. Although they can be appropriate in certain situations, i.e. summary dissolution matters.
  5. How will you communicate regarding the case? Find out how often you should expect to hear from your attorney, how they prefer/allow contact to be made, and what type of time frame would be appropriate for you to replay when you receive an email or call.

Obviously, there are more questions to be asked and more details of your specific situation to go over, but this is an excellent starting point when trying to pinpoint good, experienced Arizona divorce attorneys.
