How to Announce Your Adoption to Your Friends and Family

The decision to adopt is life changing and you will be anxious to share the news, but remember the adoption process can take months or even years.

If your family already includes children, they should hear the news before you go “public”. If you feel your child is old enough to understand, you can explain the whole process to them along with updates as things progress. Preschoolers may benefit from actually seeing a picture of the child so they can have a better connection. Toddlers may respond better to receiving the news right before the baby is to come home.

Unsolicited advice will be coming your way as soon as you tell your friends and family about the upcoming adoption. It might be helpful to email everyone with an explanation of your decision and perhaps a timeline to share. Sharing your sincere feelings and excitement could prevent negative comments and questions.

A journal may become your best friend during the adoption process. By recording each and every step forward you will be able to preserve the precious memories to share at a later date. Close friends and family will walk with you along the path of adoption. Your child will have a detailed account in later years to help him or her understand their own personal story.

Be prepared for many different reactions to your decision to adopt. Some friends may want to relate adoption situations that did not turn out well. Others may not understand your desire to raise another person’s child. Grandparents may have an especially hard time accepting a non-biological child into the family. You might want to surround yourself with other adoptive parents. They will make a great new circle of friends who can share your experiences with an adoptive child. There are also family counselors available that can help you adjust to the many situations that may arise with family and friends.
